iPod Shuffle: Random?

I've put my iPhone's iPod on shuffle play for my bought music list and I'm finally learning that this mode, like the universe, isn't entirely random. Every morning when I fire up the iPod, I keep coming across music I heard just the other day. Yeah, yeah, I know, there's an algorithm at work that takes the number of my previous plays and factors them in some how with the current ones and when all the ciphering's done, a tune is spit out. It's supposed to please me, I suppose, but instead it leaves me scratching my head: I just want to work my way through the list in a random way. Why is that seemingly not possible?

I've long suspected there's an intelligence at work behind the scenes of my iPod. This is only more evidence that it's so.

End of the iPod Shuffle Project

I've reached the end of my little listen-to-all-of-my-iTunes-in-alphabetical-order project. (Here's the beginning. You'll find an explanation of why I set out to do what I did.) As I predicted, the last song was anything but a spine-tingling surprise: The 7 Stars of the Big Dipper by Mannheim Steamroller. I know. Kind of a marshmallowy ending. Hey, don't get me wrong, I like Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas albums and that's why I bought this one but the New Age-y stuff sounds a little quaint now. Though they do have a Disney-themed album out. Hmmm.

Yep, the last batch of songs after the y's were songs with titles that began with a number. (The last song that actually began with a letter was Zaar by Peter Gabriel. So, yes, I did have at least one song that began with the letter Z. How many do you have?) Doesn't seem quite right but how else do I think iTunes should list them?

Okay, I made it through 2,046 songs over a span of seven months. Not a lot, I know, and an inordinate amount of time to do it. Hey, I don't get to listen to my iPod as much as I'd like and there was a nearly 3 week dry spell there back in late June and early July when we were on vacation, so cut me some slack. What'd I learn? My Playlist is like a time capsule. I can just about remember each time, and why, I purchased or obtained a copy of the music I have and those memories are pleasant ones. And while I have a lot of clunkers, I have a lot more music that's just a flat out pleasure to listen to. Much joy to be had from a little shiny black box. We're truly living in an age of miracle and wonder.

Time to move on, though. Unshackled by this project, I'm free to return to my other playlists or just set the controls for shuffle and let it play. It's up to me.

Hmmm. You don't think there's a life lesson to be had in this, do you?

Nah.

I'm just listening to music.

Why Not The Y's?

I'm getting really close to the end of my little project - I'm in the Y's now and how many songs can I have that begin with the letter Y? Forget that, how many songs can I have that begin with the letter Z? Okay, forget that. How many versions of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go?" Two, actually. One my Mr. Dylan himself and a jazzy one by the lovely Madeleine Peyroux. A more jarring juxtaposition of tunes I can hardly imagine.

A word about Peyroux' version. I first heard it a couple of years ago on a sunny Spring morning in a bookstore in Dallas. All of our trips to Dallas are fine ones but to hear Peyroux' delightful version on such a lovely day lifts my mood to that morning just by thinking about it. While Dylan's is as bright and bouncy as Dylan can be, Peyroux' jazz twist brings something else to it and I had to look for more of her music. That's how she ended up on my iPod and that's how I've preserved that day in amber. And isn't that what we ask music to do for us? Isn't that why we listen?

Not long to the end of the line. Oh, it'll be anticlimactic to be sure, but I still wonder how it'll end. What will be the last song? I have no idea. That's part of the fun.

Wallowing in the W's - an iPod Shuffle Update

Less than 90 tunes to go, I'm rapidly approaching the end. (For more about this project, click here.) A surprising number of tunes begin with the letter W, with many of them with the word "when" or its derivative "whenever," starting their title:

Percy Sledge When a Man Loves a Woman
James Taylor When I'm Gone
The Beatles When I'm 64
The Band When I Paint My Masterpiece
Hem When I Was Drinking
Moby When It's Cold I'd Like to Die
U2 When Love Comes to Town
Dave Matthews Band When The World Ends
Eurythmics When Tomorrow Comes
Sting When We Dance
Bruce Springsteen When You're Alone
Sting Whenever I Say Your Name
James Taylor Whenever Your Ready

The word can invoke hope or despair, a longing for the future or an ache for the past. Anytime but this time now.

Moving on, Cat Power's Wild is The Wind is the loveliest, and starkest, tracks I've come across in a while. They lyrics:

Wild Is The Wind

Love me, love me
Say you do

Let me fly away
With you

We're creatures of the wind
Wild is the wind

Give me more than one grasp
To satisfy this hungerness
We're creatures of the wind
Wild is the wind

You touch me
I hear the sound of mandolins
You kiss me
With your kiss my life begins

Like a leaf clings to a tree
Baby please cling to me
We're creatures of the wind
Wild is the wind

You touch me
I hear the sound of mandolins
And you kiss me
With your kiss my life begins

Love me, love me
Say you do

Let me fly away
With you.

As always, the lyrics hardly begin to describe the experience. Give it a listen for the full effect.

Through the U's and Into the V's - iPod Shuffle Update

Less than two hundred tunes to go. (What am I up to? Click here for an explanation.) I'm in the V's and I shouldn't be there too long - quick, think of all the songs you can think of that begin with V. I'll wait. . . See? If it weren't for the curious titling tendencies of iTunes which puts all of the violin concertos and Vivaldi in one place, I don't think I'd have any tunes to listen to.

Anyway, still enjoying myself as much as I was when I started this project. But I will be glad to have my freedom restored to listen to whatever I want to listen to.

Through the S's, Into the T's - iPod Shuffle Progress Report

It seems by far that the S's is (are?) the longest list of song titles on my iPod. With all of the suites and symphonies of the classical tracks - and some of them were quite long - it was quite a slog getting through them. A pleasant slog, mind you, but a slog nonetheless. I'm glad to get into the T's. First song of note: Everything But The Girl's "Tears All Over Town:"
Don't be unkind, for once be untrue -
can't pretend I care for her, only you
Just be on time, spare me your shame,
for once don't mention her name.
Now I cannot claim angel's wings,
but mention her name and I'll wreck everything

I saw things not meant for my eyes,
I was happy once and then twice.
I said things I shouldn't have said.
I told tales of days in your bed.
In love and war there's nothing sacred.

Just don't pretend, wherever you go,
there are things that only I know -
because I'm sure, when she's there,
that you tell a few of the secrets of yours
that I had kept for you.

I saw things not meant for my eyes,
I was happy once and then twice.
I said things I shouldn't have said.
I told tales of days in your bed.
In love and war there's nothing sacred.

iTunes Playlist - The S's - Still!

Accountant in the arts. From Wilco's Spiders (Kidsmoke):

Spiders are singing in the salty breeze
Spiders are filling out tax returns
Spinning out webs of deductions and melodies
On a private beach in Michigan

Still in the S's. Either I have a lot of tunes that begin with S or my progress has slowed to a crawl. I suspect more of the latter than the former.

iTunes Playlist - The S's

In the S's now. Two versions of Hem's Sailor, one a studio version, one live, both equally sublime. The lyrics:

Sailor

I'm not a sailor
I'm not so strong out of my shoes
Dragging like anchors

Over the ocean
Pearls in the sky are strung round the moon
Pointing to you

And I'll sail til morning
Or I'll sail til I
Am carried to you tonight

I'm not a sailor
But I'll spend the night out on the sea
Out on the sea

And I'll sail til morning
Or I'll sail til I
Am carried to you tonight

Didn't mention this group's Reservoir back when I was in the R's. I'm mentioning it now, another fine work from this group. Lyrics? Here they are:

Reservoir

Late last night, I missed my train
I walked back to the car and drove home again
Just outside of Pittsburgh, it's really not that far
Saw a light come shining 'cross the reservoir

The sun in California, it drops right into the sea
I took a couple pictures, they don't mean that much to me
Just outside of Pittsburgh, I saw it from my car
The light shines to the bottom of the reservoir

Starless night, come fall around me
Over all we've left undone
I know a light that shines forever
Howsoever we may run

The moon hung on the hillside in eastern Tennessee
With rows of honeysuckle blooming over me
But the iron hills of Pittsburgh where all my memories are
Gathering the light around the reservoir

Starless night, come fall around me
Over all we've left undone
I know a light that shines forever
Howsoever we may run
Howsoever we may run

As much as I admire the lyrics of their songs, they don't do the songs justice. I don't know how to embed the mp3 files in a post but if you should get a chance, find this group and give 'em a listen. You won't be disappointed.

Life Off The iPod Shuffle Mode

Since my experiment of working my way through my iPod via iPod Shuffle ended, I'm not quite sure what I want to listen to next. I'm using some of the playlists the iPod already creates - I've listend to my Purchases and Never Played lists but neither of those are very long. How about scrolling by Artist? Ben Folds was up first and though Songs for Silverman has some good stuff, I don't necessarily want to listen to the whole thing. But I did.

The foundering continues.

iPod Shuffle Post #D'oh!

Yep, it happened: I went to fire up my iPod for this morning's session and found it was chugging along on its own. It had somehow reset itself and begun playing and it was already up to track 250 or so.

Sigh.

So, what to do, now?

I don't think I'll take up this project again. The downside of trying to get through my entire iPod is having to put off listening to some of the things I want to listen to. Oddly enough, with the freedom of giving myself up to the control of the shuffle, I gave up the freedom to listen to anything else. So committing to any one plan means giving up freedom and I don't want to do that. But I do want to find a way to track what it is I've been listening to and comment should the mood strike me.

I'll play it by ear. (Heh.) For now, though, this experiment's finished.

iPod Shuffle Post #13

671. The Association Requiem For The Masses
670. U2 Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of
669. Sting If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
668. Bach Mass in B Minor
667. Santana Maria Maria
666. Peter Gabriel Kiss That Frog
665. The Beatles All You Need Is Love
664. The Beatles All My Loving
663. Barenaked Ladies Get In Line
662. Don McLean Dreidel
661. Hem All The Pretty Horses
660. Beck Jack-Ass
659. The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
658. Moby First Cool Hive

Track 671 is piffle when you compare it to Track 668. (Then again, everything is piffle with you compare it to Bach so maybe that's unfair.) But track 671 starts with faux classical voices and turns into some 60's treacle about the common man and anti-war and other 60's themes. Dated, to be sure, and unserious.

The iPod shuffle had a theme of farm animals going there for a while with tracks 660 and 661 but it gave up. I wonder how many other titles I have with animals in their titles.

647. James Taylor Bittersweet
646. Hem Stupid Mouth Shut
645. Billy Joel This Is The Time
644. Alison Krauss & Union Station New Favorite
643. Hem South Central Rain

Two tracks - 643 and 646 - make this a great session.

Track 647 brings me back to my back-to-college-to-earn-my-accounting-hours-to-sit-for-the-CPA days. Part of the soundtrack I'd play to and from school. CDs back then. CDs! And that was only a few short years ago. Already life before iPod seems quaint and strange.

628. The Beatles The Long And Winding Road
627. Dave Matthews Save Me
626. The Beatles One After 909
625. Bob Dylan If You See Her Say Hello
624. The Band I Shall Be Released

615. Gorillaz Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo)
614. Beck The New Pollution
613. Ceu Roda (Bombay Dub Orchestra's Grateful Dub Radio Mix)

Track 613 was one of those given away by Starbuck's not too long ago in their iTunes promotion. A good track but I have no idea how it differs from the regular mix. These re-mixes get kind of silly, don't they? If you wanted to release a different version, why not release that version and not the others? (Yeah, yeah, I know: marketing. It's like the iPod. Apple invented a great little gadget and then they sell it to you in a kajillion different versions.)

Track 617 I used to sing to the girls when they were babies because, well, they were wonderful babies.

Track 625 comes from my favorite Dylan album, Blood On The Tracks. Looks like I was wrong. I do have other Dylan albums on my iPod. I just don't know how many.

612. Three Dog Night Joy To The World
611. The Beatles For You Blue
610. Steve Winwood Take It As It Comes
609. Mannheim Steamroller Sunday The 7th Day

601. Garbage Parade
600. Pachelbel Cantata BWV 174:1 Sinfonia
599. Bob Dylan High Water
598. The Beatles Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey

I still don't know how to properly list tracks like 600. Classical musical titles are so detailed. You get the idea, though, don't you?

Funny, as big a Bob Dylan fan as I am, track 599 comes from the only Bob Dylan CD I've ripped and put on my iPod. I wonder why that is. Er, at least I think it's the only one. Haven't had a Dylan tune come up from any other CD for a while. I don't want to check my iPod for fear of losing the current shuffle settings. I'll check my iTunes on my laptop next time I'm on and let you know.

iPod Shuffle Post #8

597. The Beatles With A Little Help From My Friends
596. The Beatles Glad All Over
595. The Beatles She Loves You
594. Paul McCartney Too Many People
593. Bach Suite in D, Air
592. The Beatles Within You, Without You
591. U2 Beautiful Day
590. Steam Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye
589. Pachelbel Concerto Grosso Op 6 No 6
588. The Beatles Dear Prudence
587. Steely Dan Here At The Western World
586. Paul McCartney The Song We Were Singing

A nearly all Beatles or Beatles-related session - 7 out of 12 tracks. Oddly, I don't have any solo work from the other Beatles on my iPod - the one John Lennon album I have is an LP and the George Harrison CD I tried to rip didn't for some reason.

And there seems to be an overall theme with this session. Tracks 588, 591, 593, and 596 set the mood. Let's do what Bono tells us to do in track 591. It's a beautiful day.

iPod Shuffle Post #7

585. Sting Love Is The Seventh Wave
584. Queen Crazy Little Thing Called Love
582. Garbage Shut Your Mouth
581. Moby Living
580. Phish The Inlaw Josie Wales
579. Paul Simon Homeless
578. Steve Winwood Back In The High Life
577. Steely Dan Bodhisattva
576. Annie Lennox The Hurting Time
575. Ben Folds Time
574. The Beatles Carry That Weight
573. The Association Six Man Band

Track 573 sounds exactly like the kind of music you hear in a 60s movie that's supposed to sound psychedelic but isn't. Groovy, man.

The artist for track 575 is a surprising find. Despite his sometimes PG-13 lyrics and hipster cynicism, his harmonies are quite lovely.

Track 574 is another one of those that sounds odd taken out of context. It's part of the stitched-together side of Abbey Road and by itself it's not much of a track. Er, not much for The Beatles which is to say it's only great.

560. Billy Joel Uptown Girl
559. Patty Griffin Long Road
558. Joni Mitchell People's Parties
557. Tracy Chapman Fast Car
556. Sonic Youth Sleepin' Around
555. Dido Honestly OK
554. Dido This Land Is Mine
543. Steve Winwood Roll With It
542. Dixie Chicks Hole In My Head
551. Robert Palmer Trick Bag

Track 565 comes from their Live at the BBC compilation; it's a spoken word introduction to their next number and the title refers to a joke the announcer makes. It makes sense if you're listening to the CD but in random mode these things just come from out of nowhere and don't lead to anything. For the sake of completeness, I include it.

Tracks 554 and 555. Same artist, different CDs, both great.

532. James Taylor September Grass
531. Dave Matthews Band Dreams Of Our Fathers
530. Peter Gabriel Big Time
529. Robert Palmer She Makes My Day

524. Bonnie Raitt Love Letter
523. The Pogues If I Should Fall From Grace God
522. Norah Jones The Nearness Of You
521. Jackson Browne Jamaica Say You Will

Though it's October, track 532 comes along at the right time. The sentiment behind it is appropriate for the time of year. Along that line, track 525 reminds us of what waits after Winter. Bright and cheery.

Track 533 is just lovely.

The title of track 523 doesn't quite hint at its raucousness. Fun, though.
